ABSTRACT
How do TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) leadership skills develop throughout our careers? To what extent are these skills sought after in making policy and advocating on our behalf outside the profession? Governments, nongovernmental agencies, scholarship, and exchange programs support TESOL professionals throughout our professional careers; but how do they view our value and our professional efforts in teaching, research, and service? Does a preservice TESOL professional actually lead? How does her expertise as a leader evolve and change as she moves through her career? What forces bear on her development as a TESOL leader? How can we help TESOL leaders? I hope to shed some light on these and other TESOL leadership issues as those relate to career path development in this chapter.
