ABSTRACT

This is one of the best known of the European national crowns and the most splendid one with enamels. Known also as the Holy Crown, this venerated emblem of nationality was used for the coronation ceremonies of the Hungarian kings. In its present state, it was used to crown the last Hungarian king, Charles IV, in 1916. Following the Second World War it was brought out of Hungary in 1945, and secreted in Fort Knox until its official return by the US Secretary of State on 6 January 1978. It is now in the Hungarian National Museum, Budapest (see Hungarian enamels).
