ABSTRACT

Arching, twisting or bending out of shape of a metal plaque or article fused with an unequal coating of enamel. Such distortion arises as a result of the pull exerted by the solidifying glaze on the underlying metal base as the workpiece cools after firing. This pull arises from the differences in the COEFFICIENT OF EXPANSION of the metal and the enamel coating (see ENAMELS, PROPERTIES OF).
