ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the nature of the relationship between attitudes and certain types of experiences that partners may have had over their lives. It also examines the relationship between life and work history variables and the domestic practices of partners. The chapter explores a model of the male partner's attitudes toward who should have ultimate responsibility for domestic work. It presents the comparison groups for work status are those that would seem to be the most traditional in their responses from analyses, thus for women, the comparison group is full time housewives and for men, full time workers. The chapter shows that the male partner's attitudes themselves are shaped indirectly by their partner's paid work history and directly by their partner's attitudes. The life history variables used in the analysis represented factors connected with the parents of both of the partners.
