ABSTRACT

The Dynix software can run on a wide range of hardware platforms, from 286 based PCs with only one or two terminals, to large super mini computers with over 500 terminals, from a wide variety of manufacturers. The Dynix software runs under the Pick operating system, so the hardware chosen must reflect this. With the growing emphasis on Open Systems, and the availability of Pick software running under the increasingly popular Unix operating system, the percentage of Ultimate systems, UK and worldwide, is likely to decrease and the percentage of Unix based hardware platforms, for example Hewlett-Packard and MIPS systems, will correspondingly increase. There are six series of Ultimate systems in use worldwide by Dynix sites at present, ranging from the smallest 1400 series to the supermini 7000 series. All Ultimate systems are based on either Honeywell-Bull, DEC, IBM or Tandem hardware. The Dynix system can be installed on IBM compatible 286, 386 or 486 PCs.
