ABSTRACT

The core objective of our world plan is simple: to increase economic growth – indefinitely. The effects of human activity on the environment or climate are totally excluded from growthist economic accounting and treated as an irrelevant ‘externality’. Whereas development in nature and human history curves between ascent and descent, the projected growthist graph is linear, constantly slanting to the top right, like a rocket taking off on a flight to infinity. Competitivism has become so rooted in growthist international relations, business, politics and even popular culture that it seems like an incontestable norm. Growthism is based on a prioritization of the interests of the individual, which potentially tips the social balance away from the interest of the majority. The final value in growthism’s unbalanced value system is technologism, the myth that all human progress can be equated to the progress of technology.
