ABSTRACT

Professionals often prefer the sound of classic equalizing, pre-amps, tape machines, plate reverbs, tube compressors or tube microphones over modern equipment. The sound of classic equipment has become part of our collective consciousness. Whether it’s a Stratocaster, a Linndrum, a Roland 808 drum computer or an Elektro Mess Technik 140 plate reverb, these devices will forever be associated with the great pop classics. The electronic components of modern devices are combined in Integrated Circuits (IC). IC’s are small, cheap, and efficient with power and can easily be manufactured in large quantities. Universal Audio has not only produced legendary hardware, but it has become one of the leading software brands too. Similar to Avid’s Pro Tools, Universal Audio offers its own ecosystem of plugins for Mac and PC that must be powered by its “Apollo” audio interfaces. Solid State Logic consoles have helped shape the sound of pop music. Since the 1980s, every single instrument could be compressed by the channel’s built-in compressor.
