ABSTRACT

Assistance makes recording easier. With one person moving the mics and another listening in the control room, it will be easier to assess mic positions. Many classic drum recordings were made with just one mic. In case music producers are after a vintage sound or own just one mic, there is the great advantage that a one-mic recording always has perfect phase. Since the 1970s, the multi-mic technique has become the most popular technique for recording drums. With drums, sound starts with proper tuning and damping. Although it may not be easy to hear a specific tone in a tom or kick drum, drums will sound better when they are in tune with the music. A drummer striking his cymbals softer is of great help for the production. The fierce transients and unforgiving amount of high-frequency energy of many percussion instruments are so different from other instruments that it can be hard for them to blend in the mix.
