ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the research design used to explore these research questions and to discuss methodological issues. It explores relationships between the ways pre-registration student nurses are taught about nursing and attitudes to care delivery using a survey approach. The final phase of the data collection is of conducting a survey of pre-registration student nurses’ attitudes towards student-centred learning and teaching and patient-centred nursing care. The nurse education institutions which had participated in the nurse teacher interviews were to be used to obtain samples for the pilot and main study of the student nurse questionnaire. The student nurses were requested when completing the questionnaire to ask for clarification if anything was unclear. Data analysis of the pilot data was initially directed towards examining responses obtained to the statements pertaining to student-centred learning. An initial issue when considering the main study student nurse questionnaire survey was selection of the research sample.
