ABSTRACT

There are many synonyms to describe truth in science: reliable, warranted, genuine and valid, to name a few. Sometimes these words are used as an alternative to truth when truth is what is meant. Technological advance relies on other factors which are outside of science proper. The foundations of science are built on sand because theories come and go and the search for truth is elusive. Philosophy of science, as a branch of philosophy, is grounded in the ancient question of how we know, and in the case of science, how we know about the world of science. Karl Popper's and Thomas Kuhn's contribution to philosophy of science is immense, more as to the number of questions their ideas raise, than the number of solutions they provide. The term scientism refers to the improper usage of science, either by scientists assuming an authority over topics which are outside science, or by non-scientists distorting science for their own usually political ends.
