ABSTRACT

Deficit model starts with the question of how one communicates science, an inherently technical subject, with the public, the majority of which know hardly anything about science. In addition to the effect of science on society and the role of communication, there is also the effect of communication on science itself. Communication is not just between scientists and other parties, but also between scientists and other scientists, both within and outside of their direct field. Science Communication is a catch-all term which includes Public Understanding of Science (PUS), Science and Technology Studies (STS), Outreach and Popularization. It involves scientists interacting with the media, the public, organizations, individuals and each other. Out of all the sciences the one that is most immediate in people's lives, in respect of their own health and wellbeing, is medicine. From the viewpoint of communication between experts and the public, communication between doctors and their patients can be a matter of life and death.
