ABSTRACT
Europe has growing Muslim minorities, but Europeans lack experience and imagination when it comes to the vital question of how to relate to them. Indians, by contrast, have many centuries of experience with Hindu-Muslim relations and have developed repertoires for managing them. India is home to an ancient civilization that offers unique learning opportunities for Europe. Hindu-Muslim relations are not always harmonious and have sometimes descended into violence, but even so the communities have managed to coexist for many centuries.
