ABSTRACT

Indian secularists suffer from an unresolved tension. On the one hand, they stand for minority accommodation. On the other hand, they find it difficult to justify that people deserve preferential treatment because they belong to a religious minority. To resolve this tension, they redefine secularism in terms of progressivist values like development, social justice and cultural diversity. On balance, Indian secularism can serve European liberals not only as a model but also as a warning.
