ABSTRACT
The Introduction to The Architecture and Landscape of Health provides an overview of the book and explains its context and rationale. It then gives a brief review of the concepts and rationale behind this study of the history of therapeutic health care buildings and places. This chapter touches on ideas that have informed the design of places intended to improve the health of the population and highlights the importance that was assigned to place as an instrumental part of treatment. The chapter concludes with a precis of each of the chapters on the architectural and place types of public parks, public baths, quarantine stations, asylums, leprosaria, sanatoria and homes.
