ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 introduces the dimension of space and its relevance to urban regeneration and tourism. The chapter first introduces the notion of territoriality in the analysis of urban regeneration and tourism. It then discusses the dimension of space as area/site, with a range of examples of urban regeneration and tourism projects in former industrial sites, dockyards and historic city areas. The chapter also introduces the dimension of space as identity and contestation, with a range of case studies illustrating how urban regeneration and tourism projects may boost local identity or toughen site contestation between local residents and urban growth coalitions. Finally, the chapter illustrates the dimension of space as geographical range, with a comparison of projects from different world regions. The last section acknowledges how local and global constraints are relevant in shaping urban places into spaces for leisure and tourism.
