ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the contextual background of China’s education system in general, and its vocational education and training (VET) system in particular, under the social and economic transformation influenced by globalisation externally and economic reform internally. Issues such as economic growth and the impact on the demand for skilled workforce, and urbanisation and migrant workers who require upgrading skills set up the underpinning rationale for reforming the existing VET system by new policy initiatives and school management systems. This chapter also provides an overall structure and the logic of developing the following chapters within this book.
