ABSTRACT
As a result of the nature of urbanism in Norway, the number of town directories published before 1950 was relatively low. Town directories supplying information on single, individual urban environments were only published for the larger, more significant towns in Norway. For the smaller towns dedicated volumes did not appear. After the turn of this century, for many settlements directory-style information was published but only within a so-called Fylke or county directory. These had for the most part a common core format including, for each individual settlement within the Fylke, separate alphabetically classified lists of residents and tradesmen and professionals along with a gazetteer of local organisations and administrative functions. As Fylke directories often represent the only directory-type information available for certain urban environments, a comprehensive catalogue of those volumes appearing in the Universitetsbibliotek i Oslo is presented below. This catalogue includes the publication title (appearing in bold), a list of the major settlements appearing in the volumes and the years for which these directories were published with the edition number bracketed where it could be ascertained.
