ABSTRACT

In order to make the task of compiling the bibliography more manageable, whilst at the same time ensuring as comprehensive a coverage as possible, two strategies were adopted. The first concerns the types of directories under consideration. The second strategy relates to the establishment of a common sampling framework that could be used in all of the countries. Town maps and plans accompanying directories are important as they provide a spatial representation of the area covered by a directory, especially for the main settlement. This entry in the bibliography details whether a street map of the principal settlement appears in or accompanies the directory. A code system is used to reveal the location of a particular directory edition. Each directory collection consulted for the compilation of this bibliography is ascribed a distinct identification code.
