ABSTRACT

The major library collection is the Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek (the Austrian National Library in Vienna), which was used as the basis for this bibliography. Its holdings of directories are not restricted to towns within the present borders of modern Austria, but rather included material from the wider realm of the old Austro-Hungarian empire. The Austrian National Library gave a broad coverage of directories, although subsequent research exposed a number of significant gaps. As the bibliography illustrates, the directory collections of such libraries varies considerably from 115 volumes at the Universitats-Bibliothek Innsbruck, to 30 at the Vorarlberger Landes-Bibliothek. Further research indicated that one further library collection should be examined at the local level, which was the Wiener Stadt- und Landesbibliothek (Vienna town and state library).
