ABSTRACT

This chapter assists the R4R therapists in helping group members to continue their discussion about functional analysis in order to identify anorexia nervosa’s (AN) adverse impact on patients and family members, the purposes AN serves, alternative healthier ways for patients to meet their needs, and dolphin or St. Bernard caregiver responses to promote motivation and change. There is emphasis on how AN’s efforts to foster disconnections are also supported by toxic Western (especially American) dominant sociocultural values and young adult developmental needs (e.g., autonomy). The chapter also provides guidance on how to conduct small and large group discussion about strategies for connection that increase positive energy for recovery and strengthen connections with one another. There is continued emphasis on promoting patient and family member ability to be open to difference, while remaining connected with one another. Chapter 11 concludes with a review of Session 7 main goals, materials, and handouts.
