ABSTRACT

This chapter provides instruction on how to help patients and family members work together to (a) identify points of tension and disconnections (mealtime and non-mealtime) characterizing anorexia nervosa (AN) and (b) strategies that move them from disconnection to better connection with self and others. The therapists are instructed on how to review the two main types of disconnections and the internal and interpersonal disconnections associated with AN. There is emphasis on how to conduct small and large group discussion about the points of tension and disconnections, including tips on managing tension that may occur through simply having this discussion. A clinical vignette shows how the R4R therapist helps a patient, her parents, and siblings practice new emotional and relational skills in order to identify and move through a disconnection about mealtimes. The vignette addresses the important use of validation; exploration of internal states and associated meanings, analogies, and metaphors; and “we” versus only “I” statements in helping group members move from disconnection to better connection with self and others. A handout is provided that outlines strategies to move from disconnection to better connection. The chapter ends with distribution of recovery-oriented mealtime information and support strategies and an outline of Session 9 main goals and materials.
