ABSTRACT

This chapter provides instruction on how to help members identify and work through interpersonal disconnections and points of tension specifically related to the transition into young adulthood. This work includes helping group members identify the earliest signs that anorexia nervosa (AN) is offering itself as a solution to the tension/anxiety associated with adult developmental challenges, as well as problem-solving alternative coping strategies and obtaining support needed from others to navigate this transition. Chapter 16 includes handouts and language describing the stages and challenges young adults face during this transition. It includes direction for how to use small and large group discussion to identify these challenges, related interpersonal disconnections, points of tension, and triggers for the eating disorder. A clinical vignette shows how the therapist, with help from the group, assists a patient athlete to identify a point of tension/disconnection, the earliest internal and external signs of feeling triggered to engage in symptoms, and alternative coping and self-care strategies to deal with feelings of inadequacy and anxiety. The chapter also addresses possible challenges when working through points of tension/disconnections, including how members tend to discuss thoughts versus feelings, patient reticence to share points of tension/disconnections, and group silence. The chapter ends with an outline of Session 12 main goals, materials, and handouts.
