ABSTRACT

This chapter assists the R4R therapists to help patients and families continue identifying developmental challenges, points of tension, disconnections, high risk situations (especially transitions), and triggers that may contribute to relapse. There are handouts and an emphasis on helping group members identify the earliest signs of a potential relapse and problem-solving identification as well as practice of relapse prevention strategies. The chapter provides language on how to more fully describe animal caregiving metaphors, allowing family members to learn about effective versus ineffective caregiver styles. There are questions regarding caregiver styles that can be used during large group work, as well as a clinical vignette (including therapist disclosure) that shows how to talk with members about these styles. Additionally, there is instruction on how to conduct small group work wherein group members identify caregiver styles in their own families. Clinical examples and a longer vignette show how the R4R therapist promotes dialogue about differing perceptions of caregiver styles when members return to the large group to discuss their findings. The chapter ends with handouts allowing group members to practice developing relapse prevention and support plans. Members are encouraged to develop discharge plans that include community-based supports and promote continuity of connections and treatment. The chapter concludes with an outline of Session 13 main goals, materials, and handouts.
