ABSTRACT

Noting that the field has not yet identified a definitive treatment for anorexia nervosa (AN) in young adults, Chapter 2 describes the potential of Reconnecting for Recovery (R4R) Multifamily Therapy Group (MFTG) for young adults with AN. The chapter begins with a review of the nature, origins, and outcomes of MFTG provided to adults with other chronic behavioral and physical health problems and adolescents with AN. Next, the potential benefits of MFTG for young adults with AN are reviewed in the context of their developmental challenges; morbidity and mortality risks; increased chances for chronic illness; and the possible anosognosia, ambivalence, and avoidance involved in transitioning from adolescent to adult treatment settings. Chapter 2 ends with discussion of the young adult’s desire for autonomy and support from caring adults while experiencing challenges with information processing due to AN and less than full development of the frontal cortex before mid-twenties. The chapter also describes caregivers’ needs for support and education in coping with their own intense emotions, while also empowering their young adult and disempowering AN. R4R MFTG provides the opportunity for family members to talk with others who share the same lived experience of dealing with a loved one with AN.
