ABSTRACT

The new force consists of more than simply new ideas or programs; rather, it is a new method and style of action which contrasts so highly with conventional modes that it can legitimately be called a counter-culture. Outlining these contrasts sets the stage for a full typology of the new values and for a history and description of the counter-culture's manifestations. On campuses protest grew into activities more central to the new style of the counter-culture. In the Middle Ages a rigid and obsessive devotion to virtue and religious purity led to a counter-culture of witchcraft and heresy and a repressive reaction by the dominant culture. The current counter-culture similarly rediscovers qualities which have been suppressed by our dominant culture. The counter-community allows intense personal bonds with each other member, while also serving as a mechanism for social and political consequences for more than its immediate membership.
