ABSTRACT

Outside London networks shot up and settled down. Leeds was the first city to form a network, out of the efforts of Ted Brown. Later the Whites, Mike and Jen, sold it further, linking it with other activities among those in the locality seeking new styles and horizons. Manchester struggled to find form. David Kaye made several attempts but failed. Then later PNP did become a reality there and grew to be part of the underground scene. In Birmingham two tries were abortive until Peter Waight soared on to the scene. Originally Peter came to interview me about PNP for the local newspaper, on which he worked. Roused by its possibilities he resolved to forge a network in that most ugly and unfriendly of cities. He wrote articles, advertised, probed around the University, and eventually succeeded in forming the largest network outside London. I was often in Birmingham during that period, and saw how Peter burned to get things going. It needs this from one, from several, to give a PNP a reality. Once it exists it can run to an extent under its own steam. But to give it birth - that needs colossal commitment.
