ABSTRACT

The first real contact I had with psychiatry was back in 1965, in Australia. I was in Sydney. I had come there after six months in Perth and short stays in Adelaide and Melbourne. My wife Pamela had been doing a series of meaningless jobs to keep us, whilst I wrote. I had been writing for about two years on and off, whilst travelling through the East prior to Perth, and I thought it was about time I did something for the exchequer. Also, we were desperate to get away from Australia, and we needed money for that. I got a job teaching mathematics at a girls’ high school.
