ABSTRACT

Anything that is artificially developed to perform tasks ordinarily requiring human intelligence can qualify as Artificial Intelligence (AI). Though many of the developments which brought us to the current epoch in AI are relatively recent, the role of World War II was prominent. In the 1950s, the Dartmouth workshop was instrumental in bringing together a group of likeminded thinkers who systematically defined the problems in AI. Afterwards, AI saw gradual research and development along with a significant increase in computing capacity in the 1970s and 80s. In the 1990s, more public instances of AI vs human competition took place, the most famous among these being Deep Blue of IBM that beat Gary Kasparov in chess. In the 21st century, the major developments include huge progress in big data, data storage devices, cloud computing, and AI machine learning tools, which have given AI research a major boost.
