ABSTRACT

AI raises questions on ethical issues. These challenges are not just limited to what is legal and what is permissible but also to what can be called moral in a civil society. There have been instances when technology inadvertently led to outcomes that were not ethical, e.g. the use of IBM machines in the purging of Jews by Nazis, or the sale of advanced weapons to dictators who used them to kill innocent civilians. We face a new set of questions now with the rapid progress in AI. How should AI collect, store and use big data, especially when it clashes with privacy laws? Once complex and sophisticated AI algorithms are developed, how do we ensure that they are not used to throttle competition and take advantage of customers? If we fail to do so, the material and technological progress that we achieve with AI will remain completely meaningless.
