ABSTRACT

In a democracy, the issues taken up by politicians are rarely determined by how important they are. More often, politicians only take up issues on the basis of electoral potential. Because of popular sentiment, it also seems like the clock has started to turn back on one of the most powerful and influential concepts that has driven the world in last 60–70 years, “Globalization”. It is worrisome that AI has not been part of mainstream discussions yet. In the last 20 years, automation and AI have led to huge job losses but this issue has not been talked about much because the enemy is a machine and it is difficult to vent your anger at machines, for both politicians and the public. Unless AI becomes a topic that is discussed by mainstream media and the public gets involved in these debates, the policy response will be slow.
