ABSTRACT
Taking as anecdotic situation of departure a ride on a Japanese bus, this chapter technically explains what “meaningless” means. It pinpoints linguistic and cultural processes and functions through which human beings pass from the total ignorance of meaning to a full grasp of it. At the same time, it exposes the modalities through which these patterns are sometimes reversed into their opposite: an inexorable decline into a meaningless existence.
