ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the editorial department and its various crew members. Budget and software issues are explained, as is the technical workflow of the editor and important editing principles, such as match on action, continuity, and coverage. Examples are drawn from 2001: A Space Odyssey and Lawrence of Arabia. There is a case study of the editorial collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker, as well as an interview with editor Andrew Hafitz, who edited films such as The Last Days of Disco and Keane. The chapter concludes with a list of tasks for the director to use when collaborating with the editor.
