ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the post-production sound department, and the responsibilities of its department head, the supervising sound editor. Some key sound design concepts are explored, such as density versus clarity, and the use of music in movies. Examples are given from Apocalypse Now and several films from Joel and Ethan Coen, Barton Fink, Inside Llewyn Davis, and A Serious Man. There is an interview with sound designer and sound editor Ryan Price (Damsel, directed by David and Nathan Zellner, and The Kid, directed by Vincent D’Onofrio), and a list of tasks to assist the director in collaborating with this department.
