ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the role of the first assistant director, as well as the unit production manager, their roles on set, and the framework of a director’s collaboration with them. A case study is provided of Steven Soderbergh’s working relationship with his longtime first AD Gregory Jacobs. There is an interview here with independent film first AD Theodore Schaefer, who has worked on films such as Keith Miller’s Five Star (2014). The chapter concludes with a list of tasks for the director to complete for their collaboration with the first assistant director and unit production manager.
