ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the role of the production sound mixer—the department head who is responsible for recording sound on set. The workflow of the sound mixer is explained here, as well as a list of tasks to help collaboration between the director and sound mixer. The director case study focuses on the sound recording approach of director Robert Altman on his films California Split and M*A*S*H (both starring Elliott Gould). There is also an interview with production sound mixer Patrick Southern, who has recorded sound for independent films such as Her Smell (directed by Alex Ross Perry) and Good Time (directed by the Safdie Brothers).
