ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that most of the metaphors are of a verbal nature, but paintings, drawings and sculptures can also serve as effective therapeutic metaphors. One example of how stories can be incorporated into a therapeutic conversation in pictorial form is the therapeutic map "The Island of Love", which can be used in couples therapy to clarify goals, conflicts, commonalities and differences between the partners. The therapist can of course also set the couple the task of producing their own "Island of Love" as homework. It is best if this task if completed separately at first, without discussing it with the other partner, and only then should the maps be compared. Pantomime can be used as a form of communication in addition to painting pictures and showing photographs and videos. The story "Pantomime" provides an example of how a therapist can use pantomime-type paradigmatic and metaphorical stories to shape the therapeutic process.
