ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book outlines an educational approach and address paths to knowing. It sets out three paths to knowledge (learned, taught, and known) to offer a collaborative method to work with people. The book chapter provides a different narrative with materials and Indigenous peoples as “discoverers”. It discusses how Gwichin became familiar with and incorporated Christianity. The book addresses significant changes in the lives of northern Indigenous peoples, and the unfolding ruptures in relations between the Canadian Government and Gwichin due to settler policies. It focuses on the darker history of Christianity and settler policies in the shape of residential schools. The book commences with apprenticeship in “working with wood” with Abe Peterson and Shoondee.
