ABSTRACT
Christianity has spread all over the world and is accepted by some members of almost every race, but examples of men and women who practise in their lives the precepts of their Master are comparatively rare. The qualities that are essential ingredients of the heroic character are power, fearlessness, joyousness, sincerity, sympathy, and humility. Each of these qualities was extolled by Christ, and all are to be found in the lives of the saints who are venerated in the Church as the examples of the highest Christian character. Power is the first essential characteristic of every hero. Fearlessness includes both moral and physical courage. This quality is a necessary ingredient of self-confidence. Joyousness is perhaps the least regarded by Christian moralists of all the attributes of the ideal character. Humility is the complement of all the others. To be humble in the presence of superiority is not a virtue but an expediency.
