ABSTRACT

Happiness the goal and love the road is a simple formula in which Christ's gospel may be expressed. But this formula was so revolutionary, so subversive of the whole structure of Rabbinical doctrine, that it could not be fully comprehended by the generation to which it was delivered. The Christian doctrine of the Redemption must necessarily make men afraid of God the judge; and since the Redeemer is identified with the judge, the love and gratitude which might be felt for the act of atonement is counteracted by fear of condemnation of the sins which made such atonement necessary. The treatment of love starts from the assumption that there is a divine purpose in all human experiences. A lover who practises this treatment is one who seeks to find out the purpose of God in everything, and having found it, to value it as such.
