ABSTRACT
This chapter presents a story of a man and his dog. The story is not an exact analogy of the origin of evil in the world, but it may serve as an illustration of how some evils may be cured by love and only aggravated by morality. Most evil is caused by the indulgence of desires, not evil in themselves, but expressed in a manner that produces injury to someone. To speak of applying to sin the treatment of love means the capacity to discover and make known the defensible motive underlying an act, at the same time that the damnable consequence of the act is revealed. In this sense only can love be boundless in its application, and a sure guide to all human action. Love and morality have the same purpose, but they adopt fundamentally different methods; they have a different technique.
