ABSTRACT

One mile outside Trincomalee the traveller is once again in a jungle, which cannot be surpassed in beauty and interest by any in Ceylon. Some of the road is bordered by magnificent forest, and the summits of the giant banyans almost touch, to form a spacious tunnel of silvery green. Wild animals of all descriptions inhabit this jungle, and at dawn and sunset nowhere are jackals more likely to be seen from the road. These alert but foul-feeding creatures, usually encountered in twos or threes, show more curiosity than fear of the passing car. The unwelcome bear also favours the neighbourhood and omnibus drivers, who always carry a gun, are rewarded by the authorities with seven rupees and fifty cents for every bear delivered at the police station.
