ABSTRACT

Here I tread on dangerous ground. I am not a zoologist, an ornithologist nor a horticulturist, and yet, with little knowledge, I greatly loved the Ceylonese jungle. I therefore hope in this cursory description of its beauties that I may entertain, even if I cannot instruct, those readers as interested in the subject as myself. The sumptuous background of trees and flowers should, I think, be described before considering the wild life which lives amongst it, but since I propose to begin with such animals and birds as can normally be seen from the road, I shall omit a description of the wayside scenery, as this is fully discussed in the second part of this book entitled “Pleasant Journeys.”
