ABSTRACT

The Day of Atonement falls on the tenth of Tishri. It is intended to complete and crown the work of the penitential season by finally reconciling the soul with the Almighty. In ancient times the Service on the Day of Atonement was of the most elaborate and imposing character. Many sacrifices were offered, and the High Priest ministered in the Holy of Holies, the innermost part of the Sanctuary, which even he was forbidden to enter during the rest of the year. The chief, the real aim, of the Day of Atonement is the reformed life. For no religion has a truer conception of the sinfulness of sin than Judaism, and the proof is in the Day of Atonement itself. The Day of Atonement has been ordained for Israel. The Day of Atonement does not give the Jew a privilege denied to other religionists.
