ABSTRACT

Geoff Barton, former Head Teacher and general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, has been a vocal critic of Government measures which he believes have resulted in students not selecting arts subjects for study at Key Stage 4. The idea of ‘crossover’ between learning experiences leads to one of the central features of the classroom study – the integration of science with drama. In process drama, the teacher presents aspects of the curriculum through activities that invite students to collaborate, devise and share a range of expressive responses. Art and music are normally given a higher status in schools than drama and dance. In contrast to learning that takes place behind a desk, process drama is an essentially dynamic mode of literacy involving physical, cognitive and emotional demands. Process drama and its use of the body in learning is the antithesis of verbocentric pedagogy.
