ABSTRACT

At the beginning of August the heat was so unbearable and we were so tormented by “prickly heat,” a tiresome skin affection caused by the sun, that we were obliged to look out for a cooler climate. When we heard that the oasis of Komul, situated amongst the spurs of the Celestial Mountains, enjoyed a comparatively cool climate, we decided to visit the town of Komul, the last Turkish place near the frontier of China proper, and to explore the numerous Buddhist ruins to be found there.
