ABSTRACT

As the Etruria made its way across the ocean, Sullivan’s diary recorded the ship’s daily mileage. Sullivan had arrived in New York while the Metropolitan Opera was between seasons, but other theatrical life was busy. The theatrical producer Augustin Daly had a company performing in San Francisco in his own recent play Dollars and Sense and next day Daly’s celebrated leading lady, Ada Rehan, joined Sullivan and others in a visit to the city’s military area—including Alcatraz Island, not yet a civil prison. In the company of Amy and Florence, and also of William Lacy and his eldest daughter Sophy, Sullivan set out on Tuesday 4 August 1885 for the Yosemite Valley in northern California. Though plagued by toothache, Sullivan did not let it impair his enjoyment. Shortly after his return from America Sullivan found the opportunity to spend a few days in Paris, travelling on 20 November in the company of Mrs Beach Grant and her daughter Adele.
