ABSTRACT

The distribution issue is a central factor playing a prominent role in Data Management (DM) in many organisations. From the issues highlighted, many serious risk factors and inhibitors to DM success can be identified in relation to the distributed database environment. DM issues in respect to node integrity and priority must be clearly defined during the design. The problems of adding distributed data complexities into the environment should be resisted in all but the most wide area, time critical, cases because of the issues of distributed database rule violations. The issues of control can be seen to be significantly more varied and complex than is the case in single processor Database Management System (DBMS) environments. As well as helping to determine how distributed database design is actually undertaken within the organisation, DM must play the central role in the analysis and assessment of available DBMSs for the distributed environment.
