ABSTRACT

The longer term impact of Data Management (DM) will be judged, not by its success within DP alone, but also by its impact on the organisation as a whole. The issue of improving systems maintenance costs is, like meta data reuse, able to provide an immediate return on DM investment. One of the most significant areas of long term benefit from DM experienced in a number of organisations is by assisting in the planning process of the business itself. To effectively support an awareness of the existence of the data resource across the organisation, DM must be physically “seen” as an integral part of it. The development of new systems, adhering to the DM standards for data description, will ensure that the problem does become further compounded in the future. Many organisations have implemented “Corporate Data Centres” to house their large computer processors in “secure” environments, away from risk and damage.
