ABSTRACT

The Bloom taxonomy is used to provide the hierarchy of learning outcomes, and for each particular demand a range of methods based on appropriateness, practicality and availability of resources has been proposed. A move away from tiered lecture theatres to large, flat spaces that can accommodate different arrangements of furniture for a range of teaching/learning purposes. Deep learning is about connections and meaning, rather than focusing on isolated elements and aiming to rote-learn. Deep learning does involve memorising, but memorising for the purpose of long-term understanding and gaining meaning and significance for the ideas and concepts, rather than memorising for the short-term without necessarily understanding. Deep learning is usually equated with successful learning that can be built on and developed, whereas surface learning is too short-term to enable progression and linking. Virtual in terms of the provision of completely online courses to online environments to support on-campus learning, enabling an extension of the space that learning can be mediated through.
