ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a description of Digital Distance Education (DDE) at its purest and shows how the opportunities mentioned in Moore’s quotation might translate into practice. The DDE model rests on consistency of practice, based on a set core approach to education. Consistency is a major determinant of student success in distance education and especially so for DDE. DDE embeds digital literacies across its entirety, providing students with a valuable suite of skills immediately transferable to 21st-century life. DDE boasts a strong user experience, based on interface testing that begins with W3C compliance and mobile device optimisation. DDE also seeks to directly complement the applications students already use – or would benefit from using – to manage themselves and their workflows. The DDE model encourages ongoing engagement with scholarship and subjective student feedback, promoting regular, intentional application of evidence across all modules and the core.
